Why Do People Abuse Animal Biography
Protesters against Michael Vick's dog fighting.
Every year, over one million animals are brutally abused or killed by domestic violence from humans. The Humane Society of the United States (http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/abuse_neglect/facts/animal_cruelty_f...) reported that anywhere from 300 to 1000 animals are abused weekly with severe injuries from their owner and many of those cases lead to the unstoppable death of the animals. There are many different classifications of animal abuse, but all of them involve serious pain inflicted on innocent animals.

Protesters against Michael Vick's dog fighting. In 2007, according to Debby Emery for Radar Online(http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2012/07/nfl-michael-vick-forgivene...), the NFL quarterback Michael Vick for the Philadelphia Eagles became an advocate of publicized animal cruelty when he secretly opened up a dog-fighting arena illegally where dogs were mercilessly forced to fight each other until the death. Luckily, he was arrested sometime after, but not soon enough; his actions had quickly caused a violent uproar in animal-lovers across America. The question on everyone’s mind that day was why Michael Vick felt the need to start something so cruel and barbaric. Why does anyone feel the need to hurt and abuse any animals?

According ASPCA (http://www.aspca.org/Home/ASPCAKids/Real-Issues/why-do-people-abuse-anim...), there are 3 main scenarios in which people abuse animals. The first scenario is when the abuser does not realize the actions they are committing are actually hurting the animal. For example, the owner may believe that they are keeping the animal under control by using physical abuse to discipline the animal. In every way though, these actions are thought of as serious offenses of animal abuse. In other cases, the owner can be cruel or abusive by ignoring the pet, unconsciously, and forgetting to give it food, water, and other basic items any animal needs to survive. Another similar situation where the owner doesn’t realize they are hurting the animal is when they hoard animals (meaning they have too many to handle) and aren’t able to take care of them all, indirectly harming the animals well being.

The second scenario animal abuse commonly is categorized under is in which the abuser does it on purpose but only once or for a short period of time. In one instance, the abuser may be young and is peer pressured to hurt an animal to seem cool or to feel included. For example, they may feel the need to throw rocks at a bird nest because they want to seem cool to their friends, but they don’t realize that what they did is essentially animal abuse. On the other hand, a person may feel the need to release their anger physically but have nothing to unleash it on except the animal, so they might hit or kick their pet. Though most people may not acknowledge it, these examples greatly contribute to the number of cases of animal abuse across the U.S.

The final, most drastic and cruel scenario, is in which the abuser does the harm on purpose constantly over a long period of time. The abuser intentionally hurt the animal because they enjoy it or it makes them feel powerful. With most of these cases, the owner feels that if they abuse the animal, they can have control over it. Some people even abuse animals to show their spouse how much control they have over them by representing their control physically on the animal. Another example of intentional animal abuse may be when the person just enjoys the violence and chaos, whether it be abusing an animal or breaking objects.
