How To Report Animal Abuse Biography
Metro Councilman Walter Hunt wants better enforcement of animal cruelty laws to help reduce abused and abandoned animals.
He found Walter a badly malnourished dog near his home Friday.
"When I first saw it I didn't recognize what it was," he said. "That is a creature of God and everybody is created for a purpose on this earth."
Hunt help get the dog to a rescue organization that has been caring for him. Rescue volunteers named the dog Walter after the councilman because he helped the dog get rescued as opposed to being sent to Metro Animal Control and possibly being put down immediately.
"I just want to say I really appreciate Robyn [Guidara] and Ashley Judd for getting in there and doing what they can to try to save his life," he said.

"It is almost unbearable," she said. "It defies individual and collective humanity to know not just Walter but a lot of animals are treated this way."
She continued, "He has been starved for months and it is absolutely inexcusable both by the people who did it, or any neighbor or passerby who did not intervene."
Since Hunt discovered, Walter three other dogs were found in the Trail Hollow Lane and Brick Church Lane area of Whites Creek.
"That is a problem that exists all over Nashville. We see it here because it is such an isolated place," he said. "I have found boxes of puppies."
It is not just a problem in the Whites Creek area. Animals are abandoned all around Metro Nashville and Middle Tennessee.
The problem is so bad rescue organizations and various shelters are bursting at the seams with animals.
"We are short staffed when it comes to animal control," Hunt said. "We don't have enough people to go out and police the streets."
Hunt said neighbors need to report abuses when they see them and get information about the offender to authorities.
Information like license plate numbers, vehicle descriptions and physical descriptions can help animal control quickly locate the offender.
"We are struggling with what we got and I can tell you its costly and we got to pay for it," he said.
Then the councilman said enforcement of current animal cruelty laws are important.
In Tennessee animal cruelty is a class a misdemeanor.
"We have that law and every now and then we will catch one and they are charged and convicted," he said. "Everything we do in this community effects everybody, whether its animal [abuse] or tearing up a neighborhood somebody has got to fix it and who pays for it? We all pay for it."
